A community emergency approaches with the proposed Senate tax bill

The Senate tax bill passed out of committee, along a party line vote and through another legislative hurdle, bringing it closer to a floor vote. In addition, several Republican Senators who questioned the bill have now agreed to support. We have also heard reports that the Senate is not receiving enough calls to stop this bill. This is a serious concern for all of us who care about health care, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions like HIV and hepatitis C. Our health care and our safety net is at risk in this outrageous Republican plan to give tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and corporations.

Programs like Medicaid, Medicare and Ryan White will lose billions in funding. Disease prevention, food stamps, housing programs and the Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA) are at risk along with many other important programs.

Please call these Senators TODAY, if you have friends or family in these Senator’s states, please have them call also, and urge them to oppose a tax bill that benefits only the wealthy while taking health care away from 13 million Americans. Your voice is essential to stop this bill!

“Hello, my name is ________. I’m living with/concerned about HIV or hepatitis C. I urge you to vote NO on the tax bill. It repeals the individual mandate, dramatically increasing insurance premiums for individuals and causing 13 million Americans to lose their insurance. It also sets the stage for massive cuts in other health care and safety net programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, Ryan White and hepatitis C programs. All of this in service of giving massive tax cuts to wealthy Americans and corporations. Your constituents will lose vital health care and services with the passage of this bill.”.

The Senate tax bill scheduled for a vote this week gives enormous tax cuts to the rich and corporations and adds at least $1.5 trillion to the federal deficit. A Congressional Budget Office report released on Sunday found that in 2019 Americans earning $30,000 annually or less would lose money under this tax bill and by 2027, most of those earning $75,000 annually or less would lose money.

In order to pay for tax cuts favoring only those making more than $100,000 a year and largely benefiting the extremely wealthy and corporations, the Senate bill includes a repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) individual mandate — the part of the law that requires most people to have health coverage — which will drive up premiums in the individual market, destabilizing and even destroying that market and eventually will require steep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and other domestic programs.

If this bill passes it will likely result in:

  • Cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Ryan White and hepatitis C programs

  • Cuts in other program such as housing, research, CDC prevention programs, SNAP (food stamps) and more

  • Rising premiums and destabilization in the individual insurance market, loss of insurance for 13 million American

  • Loss of the right to safe, legal abortions

  • Additional costs to those with disabilities and chronic medical conditions
