HOLLYWOOD—Acting legend Dame Elizabeth Taylor will celebrate her 74th birthday on Monday by donating a $300,000 mobile medical unit to AIDS sufferers in New Orleans.

The 40-foot vehicle is equipped with two examination rooms and x-ray facilities and will be operated by AIDS doctors whose clinics were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina last year.

It will be launched next month.

Martin Delaney, whose AIDS charity Project Inform helped organize Taylor's donation, says, "There are a lot of areas in the Gulf Coast that have never been served well by AIDS clinics.

"This provides a chance to bring treatment out to a much wider range of places."

The Oscar-winning actress is a longtime AIDS campaigner. She helped to establish the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985 and created the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991.
