Manufacturer Recalls Viracept

June 8, 2007

Roche Pharmaceuticals announced a recall of its protease inhibitor Viracept (nelfinavir) in Europe and elsewhere. The recall does not affect Viracept sold in the United States, Canada or Japan. In all other areas, all tablet and powder forms of the drug are being recalled, due to chemical impurities.

Pfizer, who manufactures and markets Viracept in the US, Canada and Japan, issued a statement explaining that they have “… a separate manufacturing process and manufacturing plants” for the drug sold in these countries. It has been reported that some of the recalled bottles had an unusual odor. It isn’t known whether this is related to the reported chemical impurity.

People taking Viracept outside of these three countries should see their doctor or other health care provider immediately to discuss switching to an alternative medication. All unused Viracept should be returned to a pharmacy.
