Two studies published in AIDS found poor flu vaccine responses in people with HIV, particularly in those with lower CD4 counts. The experts also suggest alternate dosing strategies to improve response rates.  Read more.

Kaletra monotherapy failure predicted by HIV levels in the brain

Using only a boosted protease inhibitor (Kaletra) to simplify HIV regimens results in treatment failure, as reported in AIDS. The people most likely to experience failure were those whose CD4 count had ever fallen below 200.  Read more.

Case report shows gingko may interact with Sustiva

In a Dutch case study of one individual living with HIV, gingko biloba appeared to interact with Sustiva, causing it to fail in this person. The data were reported in the June 2009 issue of "AIDS".  Read more.

New heat-stable form of Norvir approved

On February 10, the FDA approved a heat-stable form of Norvir (ritonavir) 100mg tablets, which do not need to be refrigerated. The soft gel capsule and liquid forms of Norvir are still available.  Read more.

As of June 10, there were 1,431 individuals on AIDS Drug Assistance Program waiting lists in 11 states. Twelve ADAPs, four with current waiting lists, have instituted additional cost-containment measures since April 1, 2009.  Read more.

FDA approves new once-a-day dosing of Kaletra for treatment experienced

With results from the M06-802 study, the FDA approved the once-a-day dosing of Kaletra for adults who have taken other HIV therapy. Kaletra was normally given twice a day (every 12 hours).  Read more.

The CMS announced that it will cover facial injections for Medicare beneficiaries with symptoms of depression due to the stigmatizing appearance of fat loss in the face.  Read more.
