In Focus #8: Fall 1999

Training and Treatment Updates

As part of our overall effort to disseminate HIV treatment information to everyone who needs it, Project Inform provides training and treatment updates to a growing number of frontline HIV service providers. Case managers, peer advocates and other service workers play a crucial role in HIV care. These dedicated people work to ensure that people living with HIV receive access to much needed services, including quality medical care and medications. This year, Project Inform is involved in several programs that provide treatment information and support to HIV service providers.

National HIV Service Provider Treatment Updates and Training
Project Inform staff are conducting HIV Service Provider Training and Treatment Updates nationally, including Worcester, MA, New Brunswick, NJ and Harlem, NY. These interactive meetings provide opportunities for service providers to discuss treatment issues and problems specific to their area and communities. Project Inform collaborates with local organizations to develop these events for case managers, peer advocates and other service providers. For information, check the calendar at www.projectinform.org or contact Judy Leahy, 415-558-8669 x213.

Treatment Education Certification Program

Project Inform and Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center conduct the Treatment Education and Certification Program (TECP), an HIV training and treatment information support program. TECP provides HIV training and continuing monthly education programs to HIV service agencies in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties. Now in its second year, TECP has trained over 250 HIV service providers. If you are interested in participating in TECP, contact the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center at 415-292-3400.

National AIDS Treatment Advocate Forum

The 1999 National AIDS Treatment Advocate Forum (NATAF) convenes December 11-14 in Miami, FL. As the primary gathering of treatment activists and educators in the U.S., NATAF yearly reaches 400 HIV treatment advocates with the latest treatment, education and advocacy information and with invaluable opportunities to network and strategize. Contact National Minority AIDS Council at 202-483-6622.

New Board Members and Staff

Project Inform is pleased to announce that Steve Black has joined its Board of Directors as Volunteer Representative. Steve is a volunteer on the National HIV/AIDS Treatment Hotline. Project Inform also welcomes two new staff members. Morgan Mack-Rose has joined the Development Department as Coordinator of Corporate and Foundation Relations. Morgan was the Financial Development Associate at the YMCA of the East Bay. Sana Chehimi, the new Treatment Education Associate in the Outreach and Education Department, comes from the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology, where she was a research assistant and acting lab manager in the Immunology Department.

Evening of Hope

The sixth annual Evening of Hope will be held November 1 at the St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco. Evening of Hope is Project Inform’s premier annual event, attended by more than 600 individual and corporate donors. Corporate and individual support through scholarships allows a large number of people living with AIDS to attend Evening of Hope. Featured guest speakers will be Gene Shearer, MD and Assemblywoman Carole Migden. Dr. Shearer is a researcher at the Experimental Immunology Branch of the National Cancer Institute at NIH. He has worked extensively with Project Inform on the Immune Restoration Think Tank. Carole Migden will be recognized for her many outstanding contributions over the years, including her recent legislative leadership role in securing a multi-million dollar increase for HIV programs in this year’s California state budget. We will also honor Ben Cheng, Assistant Director of Project Inform’s Information and Advocacy Department, for his long-time outstanding contributions to HIV research and treatment activism.

For the first time, a commemorative Tribute Journal will be published for San Francisco Evening of Hope Dinner. Corporations and individuals will be able to purchase journal space to acknowledge this event and those whom we are honoring. For information regarding Evening of Hope or about journal space, contact Julie Doherty at 415-558-8669 x223.

Partners in Hope

Partners In Hope, the leading circle of Project Inform donors, has launched its 1999 campaign. This year we received a generous challenge grant from the B.W. Bastian Foundation in memory of Dr. Robert Perkins, a good friend of Project Inform who recently died. For every dollar donated between now and December 5, 1999 by a new Partner In Hope member or increased by a current member, the B.W. Bastian Foundation will match that donation with two dollars up to $20,000.

Support from Partners In Hope members is critical in the production of up-to-date treatment information to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. With an annual contribution of $500 or more, individuals receive special recognition and a variety of benefits, such as special publications, invitations to events and seminars and public acknowledgement for donor support. To get involved, contact Brian Byrdsong at 415-558-8669 x229.

Ron Wilmot Bike Ride

The Fifth Annual Ron Wilmot Bike Ride on May 8 was a huge success. More than 70 riders raised over $76,000 in support of Project Inform’s HIV/AIDS treatment information and education programs. Ron Wilmot, an HIV/AIDS activist, avid cyclist and long-time Project Inform supporter, started the Ride in 1995. Before he died of AIDS in 1997, Ron challenged family, friends and community to continue this local ride. Project Inform enthusiastically and gratefully thanks the riders and event sponsors listed below who took up his challenge. Without their generosity and support, the achievement of this year’s Bike Ride would not have been possible.

Corporate Sponsorship

Your company can play an important role in helping Project Inform ensure the availability of life-saving HIV treatment information. As a Corporate Sponsor of events, such as Evening of Hope, you directly support treatment information and education programs and receive significant public recognition for that support. Major gifts of $1,500, $2,500, $5,000 or more qualifies your company as a Corporate Partner in Hope with recognition in our Annual Report and at special events. While there is greater hope than ever, the complexity of managing HIV disease has dramatically increased. Please help Project Inform continue to serve as an invaluable resource for tens of thousands of people with HIV/AIDS, as we have done for the past fourteen years. For information about how your company can get involved, please contact Julie Doherty at 415-558-8669 x223.

Policy Updates

Project Inform continues to actively monitor federal legislation that affects access to treatment and healthcare for people with HIV/AIDS. Members of the Treatment Action Network (TAN), the largest national grassroots network of individuals lobbying on HIV/AIDS research and treatment issues, respond to PI Alerts with letters, faxes, phone calls and emails to their federal representatives.

Recently, Congress has debated a number of bills crucial to people living with HIV/AIDS. Congress is now determining how much money HIV/AIDS programs will receive for fiscal year 2000. This year’s budget fight for increased funding is expected to be difficult due to mandated spending limits. The Early Treatment for HIV Act was introduced; it will expand Medicaid coverage to include low-income, asymptomatic, HIV-positive individuals. The Work Incentives Improvement Act (see article in PIP 28) which will help people with HIV stay in, enter, or return to the workforce and keep their healthcare benefits has been passed by the Senate. Congress is also considering Patients’ Bill of Rights legislation and legislation related to privacy of medical records. An amendment to The Financial Services Act of 1999, which would allow the sharing of medical information without consent, was recently approved by the House of Representatives.

Bar Mitzvah Gift to Project Inform

“When I was little, at least four people who were close to my family died of AIDS. I wanted to give to an AIDS organization in memory of my friends.”

Jake Donaldson, 13, of Albany, CA, is one of Project Inform’s newest and youngest supporters. When Jake had his bar mitzvah earlier this summer, he decided to donate a portion of the gifts and money he received. We are proud and grateful that he chose Project Inform, stating that “you help keep people alive.&q#8221; We thank Jake for his very generous donation, and we congratulate him and his family on this wonderful milestone in Jake’s life.

Thank you for these recent gifts in memory of …
