Update on H1N1.
Visits to doctors and hospitalizations for flu-like
illness have been higher than expected for this time of the
year. This includes all flu viruses, including H1N1. Several
million doses of H1N1 vaccine were available the first
week of October. Additional vaccine
will be available, reaching 20 million doses
each week until the end of the year. Project Inform continues
to encourage everyone to prepare for the flu season. Get and
stay informed about H1N1, avoid people who may be sick, be
alert to symptoms, consult your doctor about the vaccine, and
treat promptly — especially
if severe symptoms occur. Read

of success, raising questions about the way the
results were announced. Read

Gene predicts response to hep C therapy
in some individuals.
In August, a research team at Duke Univ. announced
they had discovered a gene that predicts treatment outcomes
for people with HCV disease. It points to poorer therapy outcomes
for African Americans. A test that can identify this gene before
starting treatment would be another useful tool to assess whether
someone starts the fairly difficult treatment plan. Read
