Project Inform joins call for greater commitment and cooperation to identify a cure for HIV/AIDS

A group of leading HIV experts has assembled to call for a major new commit-ment and better collaboration among government, industry, academic, and patient advocacy leaders to identify therapies that will actually cure HIV infection, or drive it into remission, as reported in Science magazine. Acyclovir: the next new HIV drug?

At CROI 2009 in Montreal, Canada, acyclovir—a drug used to treat herpes—
shows that it also inhibits HIV during a step in the virus’s life cycle. Two studies looked at how acyclovir affected HIV, which may pave the way to using it to treat HIV either on its own or together with herpes therapy.  READ MORE Read more.

Risk for invasive anal cancer high among HIV-positive people.

At CROI 2009 in Montreal, Canada, a study reported more sobering news on the rate of anal cancer. Unlike other diseases that have declined in incidence since the advent of HAART, the appearance of this condition (caused by the human papillomavirus) has continued to increase since the beginning of HAART.  READ MORE Read more.
