PI ACTION ALERT:
Protect Funding Increases to
HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Programs
Urge Congress to Override
President Bush's Veto of Key Spending Bill
November 14, 2007
On Tuesday, November 13th, President Bush vetoed the Fiscal Year
2008 Labor-Health and Human Services appropriations bill, which
funds health, education, and social service programs.
This bill contains an increase of $84.3 million for the Ryan White
Program, including $33 million for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program
(ADAP). While this increase is below the amount needed, it marked
the first time in years that Congress gave meaningful increases
for many parts of Ryan White. It would help many states, cities,
and clinics that are struggling to provide basic care and treatment
to low-income people with HIV/AIDS.
The House of Representatives will vote to override this veto on
Thursday or Friday of this week. The latest vote counts show that
an override is within reach! Congress needs to hear from you about
the need to protect these vital increases!
How you can help:
Call your U.S. Representative and tell whoever answers the phone:
"You urge the Representative to vote to override
President Bush's veto of the Labor-HHS appropriations bill.
"This bill contains badly needed increases for the
Ryan White Program, which funds care and treatment for low-income
people with HIV/AIDS.
"This bill also provides increases for other vital
health and social service programs.
"Congress can't turn its back on people who rely
on these programs to stay healthy and productive."
You can call your Representative toll-free at 1-800-965-4298.
You will get the Capitol Switchboard. Ask to be connected to your
Representative's office. If you don't know who your Representative
is, go to www.house.gov
and enter your zip code in the upper left corner.
