Take Action to Fight AIDS in an Election Year

Urge the Republican and Democratic Parties to Make AIDS a Priority in Their 2004 Platform … and Have You Endorsed AIDSVote Yet?

Background:
Both the Democratic and Republican parties are currently putting together their 2004 national platforms. These platforms represent each party's official positions on a wide variety of issues. The final platform is approved at each party's national convention later this summer.

This is a great opportunity to let each party know that HIV/AIDS should be a priority in each platform. Please take a few minutes to send two emails demanding strong leadership in the fight against AIDS.

What you can do:
Email both the Republican and Democratic National Committee this week. Ask them to ensure that HIV/AIDS is included in their party platform. Be personal, tell your story, and let them know why this is important to you.

If you want to make specific suggestions on what should be included in the platform, you can find some ideas on the AIDSVote website.

Contact information:
The Democratic Party has created a special page to submit ideas for the platform. Choose category #12 (Health Care), and put your message in the submission box.

You can email the Republican Party from their website at www.gop.com/ContactUs/ContactForm.aspx. Make sure you let them know in your first sentence that you are asking them to make AIDS a priority in their platform. Then tell them why.

Have you endorsed AIDSVote yet?
AIDSVote.org is a nonpartisan joint project supported by dozens of the nation's leading HIV/AIDS service, advocacy and research organizations, including Project Inform. It has two goals: to educate and inform presidential candidates of the concrete steps necessary to ensure our country is the world leader on HIV/AIDS and public health, and to educate and inform voters on the stands taken by the candidates on these issues.

The AIDSVote platform sets the standard for responsible leadership on HIV/AIDS at home and abroad. By pledging your support for the platform, you add your voice to the call for real progress in the fight against AIDS (not just politics as usual).

Individual and organizational endorsements are needed for the AIDSVote platform. If you haven't endorsed already, please go to www.aidsvote.org and add your name!

Thank you to Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) for information in this Alert. Go to www.champnetwork.org for more information about this organization.
