California AIDS Funding Increases in Possible Danger

Governor Wilson has thrown a huge wrench into Fiscal Year 1997-98 budget deliberations by proposing to pay a $1.3 billion court settlement to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) in one lump sum, rather than spread payments over a number of years. In order to come up with this $1.3 billion, all proposed increases in the budget are now potentially on the chopping block.

While no specifics are currently available, there is a possible threat to HIV/AIDS programs which have been given increases.

Action Needed:
Please call or email Governor Wilson, members of the Budget Conference Committee, and Assembly/Senate leadership with the following message:

Sample Phone Message
I urge Governor Wilson / Senator ____________ / Assembly Member ____________ not to cut funding for state AIDS programs to pay for the court settlement to the Public Employee Retirement System. These programs are saving lives for thousands of Californians living with HIV and AIDS.
